I left the Walmart parking lot and headed north to a Starbucks for coffee. They didn’t have a dark roast but offered to do a pour over. That works so I waited for the pour over. I was amazed at how fast the barista’s work. It is constant and they don’t stop moving.
Then I headed south toward Anchorage. Coming into Anchorage is a beautiful sight. You can tell that you are coming into a good-sized town, but it is dwarfed by the mountains. The population of Anchorage is just under 300 thousand and the largest city in Alaska.
Seeing the mountains was such a feeling joy and awe. Mountains everywhere, some snowcapped and some green with trees and grass. The green goes up so far on some of the mountains and then it is just rock. Mountains on all sides, not a big spectacular mountain like Denali but mountains all around. Every direction you turn your head you see mountains.
What a blessing to be here and see the grandeur of God’s creation. I didn’t want the moment to end ….., but I had to keep driving. There were places where there was bare rock right next to the road and then green up from that point towards the top. It was unusual to see so many different terrain changes from bottom to the top in such a short altitude.
I wanted to stop at Costco and Best Buy. I got a couple of items at Costco and left heading south on the Seward Highway. Totally forgot to stop at Best Buy for a cable for my laptop. That will be for another day.
Heading south along the Seward Highway, the views open to the water on the west side of the road. The sun shining on the snow at the top of the mountains across the inlet was beautiful. There are a lot of turnouts for slow traffic and parking spots to stop and enjoy the beauty of the Seward Highway.
I came to Bird Creek Campground and decided to stop to see if there were any open sites. There were several so I took one and settled in for a few days. The fee for state campgrounds is typically $20 per night. No hookups but I can last a week without hookups, especially when I am by myself. I walked up to the Fee Center to pay the fee, then walked back and unhooked the fifth wheel from the truck.
From here I will be able to go back and explore the area along the road. I know that there is a waterfall I want to explore.
At some point, I bent one of the rear scissor jacks and had a difficult time getting it down. I will need to access it and determine if it will need to be replaced while in the area.
