Denali National Park D2 Hiking

Sleep has been elusive at times.  It’s so bright out all the time, even in the “night”.  Last night after dinner it was cold.  I think it was the dampness from raining all day that made it seem so cold.  It is even colder in the bedroom area since I keep the heat contained in the living area.  The heat is set just below 60 degrees, enough to take the chill off without using a lot of fuel.

I woke this morning feeling rested.  It was the best sleep I’ve had in a while.  The cloud cover probably helped and pulling the covers up over my head to get warm helped too.

Breakfast was instant Cream of Wheat with Pennsylvania natural maple syrup to add flavor.  Warm and filling.  I am looking forward to hiking in the area today.

The hike was great, over 6,000 steps by the time I got back.  I hiked from Teklanika to the rest area.  It was a cloudy day, but I still got hot.  The outer jacket came off and inner jacket was opened to let heat out.  I stopped to take pictures along the way and have some good shots of the mountains.  I was hoping to see wildlife but unfortunately there was none along the way.

On the road out from camp a way, I met Mike.  He is here for the summer too but is tent camping.  He has a cargo trailer to haul tents and gear.  Mike was carrying two fly rods.   His partner said he was going straight to camp to get away from the misquotes but Mike and I talked.  Mike said that he didn’t even get a bite.  I shared what I learned from talking with folks in Fairbanks and the bus driver from yesterday’s ride.

We talked how we are at the age where our parents are dying.  He had to take one of his friends who was with him to Anchorage to fly home because his mother died.  Just a good reminder that life is short.

Mike is heading for Seward and then Homer/Kenai peninsula.  Mike has lots of friends coming for a visit too.  Who knows, we may meet again.

I continued to the bus rest stop, taking pictures as I walked along.  The road goes up from camp, so I was pleased with the climb in altitude.  It gave me a good workout.  At the rest area I took pictures, drank the water I brought with me and waited for the second bus.  That bus dropped another couple and me off at Teklanika campground.  The short walk back to the fifth wheel was pleasant, and I stayed outside for a while to enjoy it.

I setup StarLink to talk with family, friends and upload to the Lazyjf.org.  Shortly after that, it started raining, a steady rain you could hear on the roof of the fifth wheel.  I finished talking and the uploads, then turned everything off and stated dinner.   Dinner tonight was the leftover pasta from last night’s meal.  It was a very good day.
