I entered Yukon again a couple of miles after I started. Down the road to the river where a new bridge is being built next to the existing one. I had cell service for the first time in a day and a half. I fueled up at one of the gas stations in Teslin and headed up the road. In Yukon Territory, the Alaska Highway is route 1.
I saw a mama black bear and three cubs along the road. They seemed content to just munch away to enjoy the new food growing there. A while later I rounded a curve and there was a good-sized black bear that turned and headed for the safety of the trees about a hundred feet away.
I drove through Whitehorse and stopped at the entrance of the airport on the west end. There is a DC3 up in the air on a post as if it is just taking off or is ready to touchdown. I stopped to get a picture of it. The DC3 was the workhorse of the small runways and could even land on a grass runway.
I saw signs for Big Horn Sheep and that it is illegal to hunt them in the Yukon. I also saw signs that it was illegal to hunt grizzly bears in the Yukon. There was a large sign to watch for elk on the road. One of the rest areas has a platform for observing elk in the valley below.
The weather today was fabulous. The sun was out, and the temperature was warm, especially when in the sunshine. The low tonight is forecast for 31 so I’m a little concerned about the water lines. I will run the heat tonight to help prevent frozen water lines.
I stopped at Pine Lake Provincial Campground for the night. It’s 10:30 at night. The birds are singing and it’s still bright outside. When I was in Birch Bay Washington, the days were over 17 hours. Sunset here will be at 11:23 pm tonight and sunrise will be at 4:51 am in the morning. Days are getting longer the further north I go. Days are nineteen hours at this point.
